One of the problems with Napoleonic wargaming is that you don't often get the chance to field both red and green uniformed line infantry on the same side, so it doesn't look Christmass-like. However, the Anglo-Russian invasion of the Batavian Republic in 1799 looks promising.

I have British, Russians in shakos and French in bicornes (although I might not bother deploying the Coptic Legion).

Would the best figures to use for the Batavian Republic be the Revolutionary French, with Austrian Grenadiers? (That is what I will be using as proxies for my first attempt.) Would the Spanish in bicornes be a better match for the line infantry? Are there better choices for the grenadiers than Austrians? Any thoughts on cavalry and artillery? I understand that Batavian Republic uniforms tended to follow French patterns.

The first game will be small (about divisional size) but if it is any good it might be worth me getting dedicated Batavians.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, especially if they don't include the word "off" at the end.

I can't advise on proxies but I just want to applaud the endeavour to get Batavians on the table. I'd love to see your 1799 games when they happen.

The Russian army at this time worn bicornes for infantry and Jagers, low mitre cap for fusiliers, and a tall mitre cap for grenadiers. No shakos. Sources

Thank you, I must admit that I had assumed that the Russians wore shakos at that time. I can see that if this potential project goes anywhere beyond a trivial weekend game, I would need to do more research.
